Kelli Taylor, Vancouver Acupuncturist

My wellness journey started 22 years ago. I was lying in a hospital bed, having just had open heart surgery, I was twenty-five years old. It was clear this was going to be the beginning of something big and I was excited to get started and see how it was going to unfold.

Prior to my surgery, I had met with a dietician to map out a plan for the recovery process, it was an interesting experience because I surprised myself with how much knowledge I had already accumulated from years of being a vegetarian and working around my various food allergies. More than that, I was surprised to realize just how interested I was in nutrition and the impact food can have on our health. How WE can have an impact on our own health.

Empowered by this realization, I took an active approach to my healing, integrating a wide variety of modalities such as Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Massage, and Craniosacral therapy. My own healing was a great school of learning and it definitely kept propelling me forward leaving me always wanting to know more.

After about a year I began studies at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, and eventually graduated as a holistic nutritionist. While working as a holistic nutritionist I conducted one-on-one consultations, taught cooking classes and workshops and even put together the framework for a vegetarian cookbook. I quickly discovered that I was far from alone when it came to suffering from food allergies and wanting to make a positive change in my life just by eating better.

Having dealt with allergies for most of my life, I started searching for natural solutions and alternative treatments. When I heard about Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Techniques (NAET), a non-invasive, drug-free, natural solution that eliminates allergies by restoring homeostasis in the body, I was intrigued, to say the least. I found a Chinese medical doctor, Dr. Ting Ting Jiang, who was trained in NAET, and after a series of treatments I found myself allergy free. I knew right away that this was something I needed to learn how to do; so many of my clients were also struggling with allergies and this therapy could help change their lives!

Dr. Ting Ting Jiang became a mentor to me and was influential in my decision to study NAET allergy elimination, and later Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. With Dr. Jiang’s support and encouragement, I applied to the 5 year Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine program at the International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ICTCM). During my final year of studies, I traveled to China with a group of my fellow students to complete a fifth-year internship. My two-month internship took place in the Anhui Hospital in Hefei and involved working in a variety of departments within the hospital under the supervision of different Traditional Chinese Medical doctors.

After completing my fifth year, I opened Elements Wellness, an award-winning wellness centre based in the heart of Kitsilano, Vancouver.

If you couldn’t tell, I’m a bit of a perpetual student, constantly seeking to expand and deepen my knowledge base, which allows me to offer unique and customized treatments as a Registered Acupuncturist.

Some of the modalities that I incorporate include:
  • Nutrition and Chinese food cures
  • Aromatherapy
  • National Acupuncture Detox Association auricular protocol (NADA)
  • NAET
  • Reflexology
  • Neurolink (NIS) (Modules one and two, Academy one graduate)
  • Craniosacral therapy (Levels one and two)
  • Reiki

Women’s Health

One area that has always interested me is women’s health and I’ve completed numerous specialization courses in fertility, pregnancy, infertility, and other women’s issues. I find this area of my practice extremely rewarding and love to help women conceive, relieve painful periods and PMS symptoms, reduce or eliminate hormonal migraine headaches and even help to alleviate the symptoms of menopause.

Acupuncture Facial Rejuvenation

I firmly believe that the face is a direct reflection of what’s going on inside the body, which is one of the reasons that I studied Acupuncture Facial Rejuvenation. Many patients come to see me with the intention of working on the face, which is what these treatments do, but they also have a positive impact on the inside of the body resulting in better results and longer lasting effects. I’ve studied with both Mary Elizabeth Wakefield of Constitutional Facial Acupuncture and Martha Lucas of Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture.

Cancer

I am currently the lead acupuncturist as InspireHealth, a not-for-profit supportive cancer care organization. Patients at InspireHealth are going through chemotherapy and radiation and have chosen to integrate both eastern and western medicine into their healing journey. I also see many cancer patients within my private practice and help relieve and eliminate pain such as neuropathy in hands and feet, as well as post-surgery pain, fatigue, stress/anxiety, nausea, headaches, and digestive disorders including diarrhea/constipation.

UBO | URBAN BODY ORGANICS

A consequence of my personal wellness journey has been that over time I’ve developed quite a conscious lifestyle; I eat organic, I eat clean, I read labels, I support slow fashion, I ask questions. However, as I was building my practice it became clear to me that I was the exception and not the rule.

I was seeing patients struggling with hormonal issues such as infertility, and chronic diseases, like cancer, who had no idea that what they were putting on their bodies could be impacting their health. Most people weren’t paying attention to the parabens, chemicals or dyes in their products, most people assumed that if they’re allowed to sell it, it must be safe.

“In your face” isn’t my style. And while some may say I should have gotten on my soap box and campaigned my little heart out, I didn’t. I believe actions speak louder than words, so instead, I made a promise; I committed to using only natural, healing products in my wellness centre. And when I couldn’t find what I was looking for I decided to make my own. Cue, UBO.

What began as products that were made exclusively for in-house use has turned into a company with big plans to shake up the industry. We create intentional products, made with all- natural ingredients and high-quality essential oils. Staying true to my original intention of creating healing products, all blends are infused with Reiki energy and  Love, Truth, Beauty, Balance, and Harmony. Plus, a portion of every sale goes towards funding scholarships for teen girls to attend Girlvana Yoga programs.

Good for you, good for the world.
