10 TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY WHILE TRAVELING

One thing I love to do is travel. One thing I don’t like to do is get sick from traveling. It’s no secret that staying healthy while jet-setting is becoming more and more difficult these days. Traveling can be stressful and picking up some type of bug is easy to do. So, over the years I have found some time-tested and true ways to stay healthy and make traveling more enjoyable.

1. H2O

Yes, good old fashion water is the key to staying hydrated. Research shows adequate water intake may prevent deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in your legs), pulmonary embolism (blood clot in your lungs) or heart attacks, especially when traveling. Flying can be very dehydrating and dehydration can also cause not dry skin, fatigue and headaches.

Start loading up on water days before you travel by drinking a minimum of 1 litre a day.

2. EMERGEN C PACKS

I love this product! They are easy to put in your carry-on and can be added to any water bottle. My favourite flavours are Pineapple & Coconut, Pink Lemonade and Tangerine.

3. BREATHE INHALATION OIL

UBO | Urban Body Organics makes a product called “Breathe” Inhalation Oil. I have one in each of my bags and I NEVER travel without it. It consists of three ingredients: Eucalyptus Essential Oil, Mint Essential Oil and Lavender Essential Oil. A deep inhalation of this oil periodically during your flight will keep the airways open.

4. GREEN JUICE

This one can sometimes be tricky to find depending on where I am traveling but anytime I do find a juicery. I love to load up on my super greens and get in all my nutrients and antioxidants.. The main ingredient I like to see in my green juice is ginger. This warms up the greens and takes a bit of the cold properties (I am pulling out my Chinese food cures knowledge on you now) away.

5. SCARF

I never travel without a scarf…the bigger the better. Even in the summer time airplanes can be cold and drafty… this is a great way to stay warm.

6. MEDITATION APP

There are some great meditation apps out…my favourite is Headspace. If it is a long flight and I need to get some sleep I like to do my meditation first followed by listening to some chill music as I drift away.

7. STRETCH

Sitting for too long is NOT good for you. Get up, move around and get the circulation moving in your body. When I take a bathroom break I like to do some stretches…there is always some room either at the front or back of the plane to do them.

8. PICK HEALTHY FOODS

Yes, I know that you will be in an airport but you can always find something healthy to eat. I’ve been a vegetarian for over thirty years and in that time I have found that things are changing and companies like Freshii are popping up and making it easier to make better choices. Stay away from the deep-fried greasy foods. These will only make you feel tired and crappy.

I also like to pack up snacks for the times I can’t find something. My bag always has organic nuts (walnuts, almonds, cashews with coconut flakes), dried apple slices, and my favourite kale chips (even Starbucks sells them).

9. ORGANIC TEA BAGS

One thing I love to travel with is herbal tea. I like to stick a couple of tea bags in my carry on just for when I am on the plane. My favourites to travel with are Ginger Lemon tea (helps warm you up on cold planes and aids in digestion), Chamomile tea (helps with sleep) and Licorice tea (aids in digestion).

10. HAND SANITIZER

I am obsessed with organic hand sanitizer. My absolute favourite brands are Dr. Bronner’s and EO. What I love about them is they both come in organic lavender scents. These all natural sprays are super useful when you can’t wash your hands.
